No Pronghorn Doe Tags This Year
Late-developing data on the status of northeastern California's pronghorn antelope herds have removed doe antelope from this year's special hunt — but not from the Big Game booklet.

The booklet, printed earlier, shows tentative numbers for doe antelope hunting along with tentative numbers for bucks and for archery hunting. But the doe hunts have been eliminated for 2000, the DFG said.

Fish and Game's license office in Sacramento also reminded hunters that this year's procedure for the automated deer tag drawings has been changed and that hunters' application strategies should change with them.

Beginning this year, the DFG goes back to the system in which the first round of drawings for high-demand deer zones or special deer hunts will include only those hunters who have selected the zone or hunt as a first choice.

Because of this system change, hunters who choose a high-demand zone or special deer hunt as a second or third choice have little, if any, chance of drawing the hunt in subsequent drawing rounds, the DFG said.

Fish and Game's Region 1 office in Redding also pointed out that this year's pronghorn antelope tag numbers have been cut some 65 percent from last year's level because of lagging pronghorn numbers. Slight cuts also have been made in the numbers of deer tags available for some X zones, the office said.Late developing data on the status of northeastern California's pronghorn antelope herds have removed doe antelope form this year's special special hunt — but not form the Big Game booklet, the Department of Fish and Game said in a notice issued today.
