Oregon Hunters — Don't Wait!
Officials from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife advise hunters to purchase tags well before the deadline to avoid both long lines at license agents and computer overload. The deadline to purchase tags for the general bear, general cougar, general western rifle deer, and most controlled buck deer seasons is Friday, Sept. 29.

Historically, long lines formed at license agents the day before the three general seasons began. With the new controlled hunt deadline, ODFW expects license agents to experience sales traffic in excess of the controlled hunt application deadline in May.

"We're asking people to buy their tags early so everything goes smoothly for hunters, agents and the computer system. We could potentially have a sales day on September 29th that rivals our biggest," said Brian Alula, who oversees ODFW's Information Systems Division.

The controlled hunt High Cascades Buck Deer tag must be purchased by Friday, Sept. 8. Some deer seasons start in October and November. Elk seasons vary. Hunters are reminded to check the 2000 Big Game Regulations for exact dates and tag prices.

Hunters may purchase their tags by mail order or FAX by submitting their name, address, telephone number, hunting license number, the tag for purchase and their method of payment to ODFW Licensing, PO Box 59, Portland, OR 97207. The FAX number is (503) 872-5261. Tags may be purchased by personal check, MasterCard, Visa or Discover (no telephone orders). Please allow a two-week turnaround time during this busy period.
