Hunting Memories

One Less Deer-Eating Cat

Here is a cougar I killed near Roaring Springs, Oregon. This was the sixth mountain lion I saw between December 29, 2001 and January 21, 2002 when I shot the one pictured.

I was using my favorite rifle, a Remington 700 BDL in .22-250 caliber. The cat in the picture was stalking several deer when I let him have some lead poison. The killing shot was 266 yards (laser rangefinder yards). It was also a good day on the trap line — one bobcat, four coyotes and this big cat.

Four of the six mountain lions I saw were together. They each appeared to be well over 100 pounds.
