Hunting Memories

The Wait is Over

Finally after three seasons of trying, my son Brandon got his first turkey. We have been to the same area several times, but never had any success. We were there before the sun came up and got excited listening to the big toms. We waited patiently, but only one little hen with a beard showed. After reading an article about late morning calling, I made my son wait a little longer.

Just when I was about to call it quits, six jakes came meandering down the hill. The beards are only about three inches, but it was still pretty exciting for a 14-year-old.

The hunt took place on March 30, 2002, the opening day of the California spring turkey season.
