"Access Yes"
Meeting in Boise January 15-17, the Idaho Fish and Game Commission endorsed the concept of a new program aimed at assuring hunting and fishing access on private lands.

Dubbed "Access Yes," the idea was presented to the Commission by the advisory committee whose members are appointed by the directors of Fish and Game and the Idaho Department of Agriculture.

The advisory committee proposed to fund the program through a lottery system that would provide "supertags" for big game hunts. The supertags would be valid statewide.

The proposal aims to reward landowners who provide habitat and allow access under contract to the program. Commissioners commented that, unless a program can be established to adequately reward landowners, Idaho will continue to lose habitat and access rapidly to development.

The Commission authorized the advisory committee and department to begin the process of securing and evaluating landowner access bids. Commissioners also asked for a progress report, including funding needs, to be presented at the Commission's October meeting when funding methods and program timing may be considered.

Commissioners voted unanimously to assess current deficiencies in the landowner appreciation program, develop a proposal to address those deficiencies and plan for implementation that complements Commission objectives on land access and Access Yes.
