Hunting Memories

Tejon Ranch Trophy

I was on a guided hunt at the Tejon Ranch in California this past October when my guide, Cody Plank, and I ran into this buck during the first five minutes of my hunt. Not wanting to end my hunt so soon, we set the bar higher and went off to find one to beat it.

For two more days we passed on many bucks which came close, but no cigar. Once you see a buck like this, it's hard to get him out of your mind.

When we decided to go after him, he wasn't hard to find because he had seven does with him. All we had to do was find the does and he popped out at 125 yards. A broadside shot with my new .338-378 Weatherby, using a 185-grain Barnes XLC traveling 3620 fps and he gave up quick.

The buck was taken on October 23, 2003 and his rack measured 23.5 inches wide and 17 inches tall.
