Hunting Memories

Winery Turkey

I took this trophy gobbler on April 18, 2003. The tom weighed 27 pounds, had a 10-inch beard, and 1 3/16-inch and 1 1/4-inch spurs. The bird was harvested near the McDowell Winery in Hopland, California. Caller was Bill Crawford, owner of McDowell Winery. This was a spot-and-stalk hunt on private property. The tom was with a jake and two hens. It took almost an hour to bring the tom in close enough for a head/neck shot. One of the hens was approximately 8-10 feet from me when the shot was taken.
