Partnership Provides New Junior Hunting Opportunities
California junior hunters will have a chance at new hunting opportunities in 2004 because of a partnership between the California Deer Association (CDA) and the Department of Fish and Game (DFG). The opportunities will include hunts for deer, turkey and wild pigs.

The hunts will take place this fall on the Canada de los Osos Ecological Reserve located in Santa Clara County, California. The DFG in cooperation with CDA will host these junior hunts on this 4,200-acre property, which currently is only open for scheduled youth events. The property supports a very healthy deer herd which includes numerous bucks. In addition, flocks of turkeys and wild pigs roam the hills and valleys of the Reserve.

The lucky juniors drawn for these hunts will experience not only an outstanding hunting opportunity but also an excellent hunting education.

The first junior hunt will be held on September 11-12, and will be for deer only. Four junior hunters will be drawn for this hunt. All juniors must be accompanied by a non-hunting adult and have an A-Zone deer tag. The day includes classroom, range and field assistance in the techniques of gun handling and safety, deer hunting, and game care. There will be shooting practice as well as instruction on wildlife and hunting. Participants will be guided on their hunts by CDA volunteers. This will be a two-day event, with overnight lodging available in nearby Gilroy. Lunch on the second day will be provided by CDA.

To apply for this hunt, applicants need to submit a postcard with the hunter’s name, address, telephone number, and 2004-2005 junior hunting license number to:

California Department of Fish & Game
Attn: Canada de los Osos Deer Hunt
20 Lower Ragsdale Drive, Suite 100
Monterey, CA 93940

Applicants may only submit a single entry for this hunt and it must be received at the address above by 5 p.m., August 11, 2004. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered in the draw. Successful applicants will be notified by mail by August 20 and will receive additional information, including maps and special regulations, prior to their hunt.

A juniors-only wild pig hunt will be held on October 9-10. To be in the drawing for the wild pig hunt, your postcard has to include the same information as the deer hunt and must be received by 5 p.m., September 9. Make sure the address on the postcard includes Attn: CDLO Pig Hunt.
